The Multi-familial Psychoanalytic Group (MFPG)
Norberto Mascaró Masrí (Bilbao, Espagne)

The Multi-familial Psychoanalytic Group treats various mental pathologies using a hierarchically structured therapeutic space. The group is composed of families of different origins who present various issues. As a mini society sharing similar experiences they can speak to their psychic suffering, confront their difficulties and be supported in the process.
A variable number of professional co-therapists lead these groups ranging from 30-199 participants. Sessions are held weekly and last for 90 minutes.

In contrast to the classical pre- established frame, we work with a more ‘spontaneous frame’’ and regard therapeutic availability as the basis of the therapeutic relation. The concepts of helping and containing constitute the pillars to create the appropriate secure emotional climate. Such a climate allows the participants to connect with their experiences of powerlessness, devaluation, suffering and violence etc that they were unable to expand upon during their earlier development due to the intense emotional charge attached to theses events.

Jorge Garcia Badarraco pioneered these groups in 1958 in the Psychiatric Department of the Jose T Borda Neuropsychiatry Hospital in Buenos Aires, in the context of a psychoanalytic therapeutic community. He continued this work for 25 years in a private clinic which he directed and continues to do so in a variety of institutions and groups such as: psychiatric institutions, associations, colleges and clubs. As a result of this widespread experience he recorded 1000 hours of sessions and published various books that contributed in a significant manner to research and to teaching.

MPFG arose as a corollary to the new ideas and complex thinking that were conceived in the previously described experiences These innovative perspectives resulted in the possibility of addressing simultaneously the individual, familial and societal aspects of the mind. This was based on the hypothesis that as human beings we are interwoven in pathological interdependencies from which we frequently require rescuing. The MFGP has become the ideal context to do this work
